Chocolate Cherry Trail Mix
A balanced trail mix can be a well-rounded, healthy, and versatile snack. This simple recipe lacks the processed ingredients you’ll often find in store-bought trail mixes, so long as you use high-quality chocolate. And while it does have some sugar, the sugar content in the chocolate and cherries is balanced by the fiber, protein and healthy fat in the nuts.
My favorite thing about this trail mix is the ease with which it can be thrown together, yet it’s healthy and there are a half dozen uses for it. Here are just a few ways it can be enjoyed:
While on a long hike or bike trip (obviously)
While camping
On a road trip
In a packed lunch
On a dessert board at a dinner party
As an appetizer on game day
Alongside your popcorn on movie night
As a pre- or post- workout snack
Packaged in a mason jar and gifted to a friend
Some tips when you’re shopping for ingredients: I don’t generally like mixing sweet and salty flavors, so I prefer to use raw, unsalted macadamia nuts and cashews. If it’s difficult to find unsalted nuts at your local grocery store, you can try this recipe with conventional salted nuts which should be easier to find. Also, look for chocolate chips or chunks that are larger in size. It’s harder to get a balanced handful of trail mix if some of the ingredients are large and others, like mini chocolate chips, are tiny.
