Banana Cream Pie Smoothie
Lately I’ve been inspired to make healthy, protein-rich smoothies inspired by desserts. It’s my way of enjoying the flavor of a dessert without the guilt, and it has broken up the monotony of my standard chocolate and vanilla protein shakes. This smoothie is delicious and requires only a few simple ingredients. It’s also packed with the nutritional benefits of bananas and Greek yogurt, including potassium, vitamin B6, prebiotics and probiotics, calcium and protein. Both the prebiotics in the banana and the probiotics in the yogurt can foster healthy gut bacteria and aid in digestion.
To maximize the protein and minimize the sugar in this smoothie, I recommend using plain, full-fat Greek yogurt. There’s still some controversy over whether low-fat dairy is truly better for us, and whenever there is a debate over whether a food is healthy or unhealthy, I use common sense to choose the right nutritional path for myself. Common sense suggests that because full-fat dairy is less refined and closer to its natural state, perhaps our bodies are more equipped to process it.
If you have issues with dairy or prefer to avoid it (which I can understand, as the idea of drinking the milk of another animal also seems unnatural), this smoothie would also be great with coconut yogurt.
